The CBS ultra-popular Survivor television reality show makes a great party theme idea, because it's fun and active, with lots of possibilities for food, island decor, and challenge games. If a pool is available (even a wading pool), it will add even more to the Survivor island atmosphere.
The Survivor TV show party theme could be used for many unique types of events and groups sizes and would make an extra cool theme for a birthday party for Dad. Seems like dads get stuck with the same old boring parties year after year. It's time Dad had a little more spice in his life, so how about throwing him a Survivor birthday to "wow" him this year on his big day?
Ideas for a Do-it-Yourself Survivor Party
- This is a great theme for an outdoor party (backyard, park or beach).
- Look for tropical decor in party stores (many online) in the way of Luau supplies. Have fun picking and choosing what is needed (cups, plates, plastic ware or chopsticks, table decor, palm trees, torches, Tiki ornamental items, or whatever seems fun).
- If guests will be divided into tribes, find or sew "buffs" in tribe colors. One buff per person will be needed.
- Perhaps the guest of honor will want to play the host, Jeff Probst.
- If tribe challenges will be involved, consider getting an immunity idol and prizes for the winning tribes.

Food Ideas for a Tropical Island Party
- For an Island theme main dish, consider barbecued fish and/or crab. Side dishes can be platters of tropical fruits (such as pineapple, bananas, papaya, and guava) or ambrosia salad, rice, and Hawaiian bread or rolls. Consider using a mixer to make tropical fruit-juice drinks and smoothies, unless you want a more authentic "Survivor" experience (in which case, guests can ladle water out of a barrel!).
Hawaiian Haystacks Recipe
For another idea, try this festive main dish recipe that is easy to set up and serve a crowd. To serve, everyone starts with a plate of hot rice with chicken and gravy:
- 1 cup cooked rice per person
- 1/2 cup per person cooked chicken meat
- 1/2-1 cup per person chicken gravy, or cream of chicken soup diluted with canned milk
Next, each party guest builds their own "haystack" with different toppings of choice (simply set out in serving bowls with spoons) and then... eat. Here are some favorite toppings:
- Chinese chow mein noodles
- thinly diced celery
- diced green bell pepper
- pineapple tidbits or chunks (drained)
- shredded mild cheddar cheese
- thinly sliced green onions
- shredded coconut
- slivered almonds
